Group of PhysiciansPrimary Care Physicians – What is the Role of the Primry Care Doctor?

Ever heard of primary care physicians? Family doctors have become a thing of the past. They were greatly relied upon for all health related issues. Your family doctor would be the person you would call to set a broken bone, assist in childbirth or prescribe medication for illnesses. Family doctors handled all health issues pertaining to the family and were considered part of the family. With the development of the health care system, family doctors have been phased out. However, the introduction of primary care physicians promises to bring back the tradition set by family doctors of the past.

These physicians do not specialize in any area of medicine. Their main focus is to help their patients maintain their overall health. Thus they are focused more on preventative care than they are on curative care. Many insurance companies are making it a requirement to have a primary care physician. It is therefore advisable to register with one at your earliest convenience.

Before you decide on which physician to register with, it is important that you understand which medical specialties qualify as primary care physicians. Doctors in family or general practice are qualified to treat the whole family. They have training in various areas of medicine and may be board certified. Although doctors specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics are specialists in a certain field, they are also considered primary care physicians. This is because they treat a wide variety of ailments for different age groups (pediatricians treat children from birth to adolescence).

If you have a special treatment requirement, involved in an auto accident or injured at work, your primary care physician ought to be able to refer you to a specialist. Many of these doctors have links with doctors and medical clinics offering specialized treatment.

Choosing a primary care physician is not an easy task. It may be tempting to simply pick a name out of the phone book and register with them however, you will not know what to expect from this doctor. If your health insurance company has insisted that you register with a primary care physician, you can ask them to provide you with a list of doctors that they have under their network that may be accepting new patients.

Ask your friends, families and colleagues about their primary physicians. Find out about their services and if they are willing to take on new patients. Personal referrals often lead people to the physicians that best suit their requirements. This is mostly because you already have feedback on their services from their patients.

If you already have a doctor of any kind, you can request them to help you find a primary care physician. This is an especially useful technique for people moving from one location to another.

  2. You only go to the dentist one or twice a year if you don’t have any emrblpos, and even if you do have a problem, you only go a few times more than that. I’d rather pay 10 dollars for a physician because I go there more often than I do the dentist. Also, dental care is really, really expensive, and it’s hard for dental insurance companies to make money because people put the dentist last on their list of places to go unless they’re in unbearable agony. Braces cost $5,000 and up where I live, and even a regular teeth cleaning costs three figures. We have a good friend who is a dentist, and he has a hard time earning a living because people put off going, and when they do come they don’t like to have any work done anyway.I’m sure there are many other reasons for the copays being so high, but this is just my experience.

  3. Actually, the only time the copays are so low for ethlah insurance is when you’re dealing with those high-dollar plans provided by a lot of employers. (At least those are the types of plans that were provided be employers in the past; that’s changing significantly because of the cost involved.) Trust me, these are FAR from the norm. As for dental insurance, the fact is that there are nearly as many organized networks for dental providers as there are for medical providers (where belonging to as many networks as possible is the best way to ensure you keep new clients coming in to your practice.) Dental insurance, by comparison to what you pay for medical coverage (particularly of the variety you mention) is also CHEAP. And I don’t know very many people who would pay triple the price for dental insurance so they could get the $10 copay. In the end, it’s really that simple.

    • i strongly agree with ifaatni. I feel like that in Islam doesn’t force the need for a female doctor. In the article it mentioned an order of preferences for a female Muslim first woman doctor, male Muslim doctor then non Muslim male doctor. It has to do with more tradition how they look at it. It doesn’t have to do with the care system or the need for a female doctor. If there’s no convenience for the system and a female doctor is present then why not. But at the end of the day how does education, experience or skills have to with gender and religion. At the end of the day she’s a patient that needs to be treated and logically speaking if a male doctor is the one who can help her then why not? why stop him? because he is non-Muslim or because he is Man? There are lots of misconceptions that are taken out of context that views Islam as a religion with no logical. But that is not right that is not at all what Islam is about. Today, there are some Muslim that go all the way to extreme when it comes to Islam without thinking of the logic behind. This truly frustrates especially now that I see this is expanding throughout the world.

      • America spends twice as much per ctpaia on health care than any other country, yet its citizens have the shortest life expectancy in the developed world. Britain, France, Sweden, New Zealand and all other developed countries have government managed health care and their populations live longer than Americans do.America pays more, gets less, and won’t admit that insurance companies are the PROBLEM, not the solution.

      • Never heard of it, but so long as it’s a legitimate conmapy, you are making the smart choice by going with Term rather than Whole .Whole Life is a complete scam perpetrated by salespeople to make THEM more money! Think about it and do the math: if you buy term for 30 years, and invest the difference between the term premium & the whole life premium in a REALLY average mutual fund, you’ll come out WAY ahead Life insurance is to look after your family if something happens to you, it’s not an investment . LOL!Congratulations on being smarter than you thought you were!

  4. I have azaming Doctors and Nurses! I have an azaming doctor in Cayman, who works with me endlessy to help with my pain management and to ensure my treatments continue on a regular basis. She is awesome! The nurses in Cayman are awesome too always helpful and so nice. My Doctor in Miami is equally azaming! My Doctors are with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Neurology Department which is affiliated with Jackson Memorial Hospital. The NURSES there are fantastic they are in the MS infusion center and they are tops with me. They administer the infusion treatments always asking the right questions, checking on medications making sure the tests are up to date they rock! I like to say they are giving me my walking juice !

    • I have to ask, given that I did than the doctors and that the post was just four sncteenes long, why would you think otherwise? I know you can to read this blog during my ill-thought out and admittedly stupid Atheist post, but you should know that just because someone accepts things that are not currently proven by science, or deals with things that are really outside the purview of science as we know it, does not mean that they reject things that are proven by science. I believe in the ability of prayer and influence of spiritual forces to impact the healing process. There is even some studies that back this up to a certain extent. But that does not negate the fact that without medical science and its advances that magic or prayer would be extremely poor medicine on its own. If I had to choose between a Sadhana and Medical treatment, I would choose medical every time. Thankfully I don’t have to make that choice.

    • Many believe and this ineucdls JATA’s own Angela Carmichael who gave a very good webinar on ICD-10 the other day that regardless of what the AMA hopes for, the transition to ICD-10 is a done deal. It remains to be seen whether hospitals, physician leaders and educators, health insurers, malpractice insurers, CMS, and regulatory agencies are able and willing to create the collaborations with physicians and all other boots on the clinic floor so that they will WANT to learn ICD-10 and employ it. To say simply, You had better learn this, so come to this seminar/webinar/weekend CME program/etc., is insufficient. It won’t work because it does nothing to engage any party in the needs of all parties. Can you create alignment among parties so that learning and using ICD-10 is a natural, genuine aspect of a relationship? And indeed this is exactly the same relationship that weds all parties to value, to compliance, to managing common risk including the risk to the patient. This is the time to bring people together at the table. This is not the time to divide the pie. This is the time to bake a new one. The successful ones will be those who have the courage to create and test new recipes.

  5. Generally, people don’t buy datnel insurance unless they are going to have extensive work done so it’s a heavily used product. Unlike medical, people can put off having datnel work done (except emergencies) so it’s easier to plan to be insured when it’s needed and that throws off the unknown that is usually a part of insurance purchases. So, it’s priced and copays set with a little more cost shifted to the consumer.

  6. let me see if i understand this. the paitent paid for his treatment with cash. you charged him a lot less since you were starting out and wanted the business. now, 10 months later he wants you to file a claim with his dental insurance. you state he had a poor insurance plan, which most are and covers little. lets say that you charged $3K for his implants. you file the claim with his dental insurance and they will only cover $1K max. (my dental plan pays only $1K max per year). so even if they paid you $1K max, you in turn would reimburse the paitent $1K max. so in effect you should not be out of pocket just the inconvenience of paperwork. but say the paitent believes that his policy will pay you $1K and he believes you owe him the $2K difference, would be wrong. most dental plans like health insurance have a maximum amount they will pay for each procedure. what the insurance does not pay, the paitent is obligated to pay the difference. unless you were to have a contract with this dental insurance, you are not obligated to follow their guidelines or amounts they deem usual and customary charges. my guess the amount they will allow will be more than you charged due to the discounts you gave the paitent. when he came to your office, he was asked if there was any insurance and he stated no so you billed him and he paid cash. if he had given you his insurance card, you would have billed the company and they would send you a check for the services and if not covered or less than you would have billed the paitent for the difference unless you had a contract with the company. but most likely like the others stated, the time frame to file a claim and collect maybe too late. and regardless if they deny, it was your paitents responsibility to provide that info. good luck

    • ROP life insurance is ruetrn of premium term life insurance. How does it work?If you pay $20 a month into a ruetrn of premium term life insurance plan over 30 years (that’s $240 a year), you can get back a big chunk of change. You’ll receive a check for $6,000 if you outlive the 30 year term of your policy. So, do you feel lucky? You get the tax deferred savings of the premiums you pay into your life insurance policy. If you wait until the policy expires, you pay no taxes on the ruetrn premium you receive. It’s like a savings account that offers you life insurance protection, too. Some ruetrn of premium life insurance policies let you take money out early, but penalties usually do apply. However, level term life insurance offers you a better rate, up to 20-40% lower than Return of Premium Term Life Insurance. Many young families with children like yourself, choose level term life insurance because it may provide the maximum amount of life insurance coverage at the most affordable premium. With a 20 or 30 year Level Term Life Insurance policy you can get rates and coverage that remain level for the entire term of the policy. If you want, you can compare free quotes online for level term life insurance through Efinancial. They have provided free life insurance quotes online since 2001. You just fill out one form and get up to 12 Instant Quotes for term life insurance from top-rated insurance companies. To request your free quotes visit I hope that helps! Best of luck to you and your family.

    • Return Of Premium is a bad deal. Ask for a rate comparison of the poudrct without ROP versus with ROP. Then, take the difference and invest it yourself instead of with the company. ROP is a fancy gimmick to make life insurance seem like a good deal. If your agent is PUSHING this idea, find a new agent fast!At age 28, your odds of dying within the next 30 years is very slim. Therefore, every premium dollar you give the company is pure profit. Your ROP premium is added profit.Life insurance is only necessary to protect your spouse or children should you die prematurely. Your children do not need insurance protection once they graduate from college, unless they are disabled. 30 years is too long. Think about getting a 10 to 20-year policy.

    • Most states do not force you to cshooe where to take your vehicle for repairs If you use the ones your insurance companies recommend they are usually guaranteed work at 100%. If you cshooe another shop ANY!!!! errors or problems will be your responsibility. Most companies also require they insurance adjusters to look at your vehicle PRIOR to any work being performed so they know what is done before any repairs and that is normal and standard procedure. This is in your best interest as well. so it is preferred you let your company and their company look at the vehicle..estimates are just that an estimate one company may have better parts equipment software and can find cheaper local parts another may have older software and their parts have to be shipped which cost nmore and change the values of the two estimates, so estimates are usually never the same .ONCE work is performed their may also be hidden damages..this can be a cracked bumper absorner that one couldn’t see visibly so the estimate may increase..THIS IS OK if it is determined to be accident related..FYI***THERE IS A HUGE RISK IN USING SHOPS YOU CHOOSE UNLESS YOU PERSONALLY KNOW THEIR WORK *Insurance companies pay people to research and monitor body shops who they place on their lists, in most states it is illegal to get any amount of the shops profits..they are partnerred with trust and confidence and recommendations..if a shop has angry customers reviews, service and work they are quickly and easily removed because other shops WANT to be in connection with free recomendation and customers** If you go to a shop who owes back taxes it is your responsibility to ask, because the govmnt will take their back taxes due amount from any work performed by that shop If the company that you cshooe disagree’s with the bill they can hold your vehicle until their pymnt is made and won’t care if you are in the middle..If you cshooe your own shop and they pait your maroon car red is some areas it is your responsibility to get it corrected. It is not worth the risk. I ALWAYS use their shop because they have to fix the damages and return you to a rental if it is something their shop did wrong If you use your cshooen shop good luck..sorry so long

  9. I just spent $54,000 on my teeth for a full mouth smile makeover, and that was the chsepaet uninsured quote I could find in Oregon! There’s no economic depression in dentistry, they are raping the uninsured like never before. If you want to get rich in a bad economy, become an oral surgeon specializing in dental implants, you’ll be rich within months like my dentist, he’s only 29 yrs old and already owns a 2.4 million home, 3 Mercedes Benz and flies to his 2nd home in Bermuda 4 times per year
